  • Human Beings and short-term profit.

We humans are silly creatures.  I constantly hear people talk about what happened yesterday, what's happening today and what will happen tomorrow.  They aren't very exciting things.  They are only things that will benefit them in short-term.  I hear people at work say "she did this, she did that" or "tomorrow I'm going to buy a worthless piece of merchandise".  I'm a guy who ponders the mysteries of the cosmos and is mesmerized how we are a part of something much much greater.  Sure, I'm human and I like to enjoy short-term profit but I'm aware that it will not last.  I'm also a "livin' in the now" type of person too so it might seem weird for me to talk about how stupid our obsession with short-term profit is.

I guess what I'm trying point out here is the importance of setting long-term goals.  I constantly think about the future.  How society will be a hundred years from now and how long I'll live or the day we colonize other worlds.  Some people I know choose to be too simple-minded all the time.  They don't like to think about the future.  It is the unknown which is something naturally feared by human beings.  Perhaps if more people started setting long-term goals there would be less people who don't know what to with their lives when they finish high school.  Others don't like to look beyond their expected lifetime.  They'll be dead so why should they care?  Well what about their future children or grand-children?  I have a friend who almost sub-conciously litters without thinking twice.  He simply doesn't care.  One day I questioned his laziness and he said he didn't care because he predicts that he will be dead before the world will end therefore his own mess won't affect him.  Younger generations always have to clean up after the previous ones.  This shows how much he cares about his potential offspring.  Is it not the job of parents to make sure the world is a better place for their children than it was for them?  Instead some rather let the next generation take care of it.

If you look in a history book the other thing you'll learn besides history repeats itself is that we don't learn from history repeating itself.  People seem to get too comfortable with some of the things in their own time and they fear change.  Change is almost inevitable.  They should start setting long-term goals to prepare for possible changes that our children might face.  Global-warming has become a big issue.  Not everyone is 100% sure a runaway greenhouse effect will happen but most scientists say there is no longer a debate.  There are people who reject clean alternative resources.  They don't believe in global-warming and they're too comfortable with our current resources even though they pollute the air.  Why not look into cleaner resources?  Releasing water vapor into the atmosphere sounds a lot better than what we're doing now.  I'd hate for our future children to live in places where the skies are like that of Mexico City where people can't go outside without something to cover their face because of pollution.  I'm not trying to sound like an environmentalist but even if global-warming doesn't happen our air will be a lot cleaner and that makes me happy.  As Carl Sagan once asked, what is more important our short-term profits or the future of our planet?

Did you know that long-term thinking is one of the major skills that separates us from our ape cousins?  Chimps use tools and have culture based groups like we do.  They shake hands and kiss in certain groups just like us.  We've studied in zoos that they have short-term planning.  When they use tools or toys they have hiding places for them to use later.  Human beings have the special gift of talking and long-term planning.  With this gift we learned how to create language and record history.  We question the unknown look forward to the future.  We've invented technology that liberate us from possible future threats.  Unfortunately we've also created technologies that feed our greed.  We've become the most dangerous species on this planet.  But we are curious and brave.  I don't want to sound like my Adv. TV teacher but preparation is key.  Humans have learned to adapt to change.  Some things that were problems with society in the past are no longer around.  We have great potential to think greater...but we are still so very silly.

Look at this...I haven't posted in forever and I come back and write a friggin' essay.

  • Thanksgiving

I'm now a college student at Vincennes University.  I am also living in an apartment down there.  My major is Broadcasting.  I never seem to have much time to write in this blog anymore because I'm always distracted by the 12389461230 other things on the internet.  Like now.

    The Future Beyond Tomorrow

In case you haven't noticed I'm pretty big on the science fiction.  I love reading short stories by Phillip K. Dick (Minority Report, We'll Remember it For You Wholesale a.k.a "Total Recall") and Robert A. Heinlein (Starship Troopers, Stranger in a Strangeland).  I enjoy reading about futuristic stories where humans have colonized other planets or robots becoming smart.  I've been watching shows on the Science Channel like 2057 or Futurecar.  It makes me ponder on what the future will be like.  Hopefully one day oil refineries will be replaced by solar farms or space travel will become more safe and cheap.

Shane and I watched a Mike Judge film today called "Idiocracy" staring Luke Wilson.  Luke Wilson's character Joe Bauers is chosen for a top secret military experiment that involves hibernation of the body.  After a few things go wrong Joe wakes up 500 year in the future.  Instead of a bright and beautiful future full of amazing technology and spaceships he finds a world of completely stupid people.  The English language has become a mixture of hillbilly, valley girl and ebonics.  Nobody bothers to read if you do you're called a fag, the President is an ex-wrestler/ex-porn star, businesses heavily advertise, the highest grossing movie of the year is called "Ass" and is just as it says; a 90 minute film of a guy's ass who farts every now and then.  The United States of America has become The United States of Uhh-merica.  The society of 2505 revolves around sex, violence, and advertising/money.  Not only is the movie funny but it raises a good question.  What will America be like in 500 years if anti-intellectualism, corporate function, a media full of a ridiculously amount of advertisements for conglomerates, and stupid reality television completely gains control of the country.  Which reminds of the reality show that appears in the movie called "Ow! My Balls!" which shows a guy getting hit in the balls in many different ways.  The moral of the movie is: smart people should breed more instead of white trash people having eight kids, people should read books and embrace intellectualism.  I think I might have done mankind a small favor for writing this.

  • Friday the 13th

The last couple of days I got to hang out with my pal Nate who is living in Shoals right now with his family.  He's dating Brittany right now so he comes in to town to see her and the rest of the guys.  Nate and I have done a lot of breaking and entering jobs and smuggling runs.  That was last summer.  Things are a little more quiet these days....a little too quiet.  There's a little split in our gang but I don't think it'll lead to civil war.

Tonight I'm working a pool party.  I don't know who its for.  Hopefully I won't get bored.  Pool parties are more laid back because you let kids roam free.  During the days you have to lay the smack down on kids who don't obey.

It's good to settle down a little bit.  When things were still active around town I was busy doing jobs and underground martial arts tournaments.  I'm planning on leaving all that behind.  I need to get back in shape.  Someone needs to wipe the scum off the streets.
